Mo Vasquez and Oscar Lopez have been running an AAU team out of Lena Park for the past few
years now. Producing some noteable players like Dorien Brown (Jacksonville University), Dwight Brewington (Providence College),
Corey Cofield (William and Mary University), Matt Cahill (St. Anselms College), and former Mustang Josh Quinn (Weymouth High
School).
The interesting thing is that assistant coach Oscar Lopez (brother Mo Vazquez is the head
coach) is a former point guard for the Mustangs. He was instramental to the incredibly successful teams Rico Cabral piloted
in the early-mid 1990's. It has been noted many times the skill and tenacity "O-Dizzy" brought to defensive end of the floor
for the Mustangs.
Metro Boston, or Lena Park as the team is know in some circles, named after the courts they
base the program out of is one of the rising teams in New England. The current team recently made it to the round of 8 at
the Gym Rat Challenge AAU Tournament held in Albany New York. For the 17u division there were 96 teams, making Metro Boston's
finish in the top 8 very impressive. The current team features many scholarship prospects such as Ndu Okereke of BC High,
Chris Donald of Catholic Memorial, Jovan Robinson of BC High, Ricky Philatre of Randolph High, James Lewis Brown of Springfield
Science and Tech High who commutes from Springfield to be a part of this emerging powerhouse program, and a player who is
arguably one of the top two players in the state, Remy Cofield a sophomore who lives in Newton and attends Roxbury Latin High
School.
The team plays with the ability to wreak havoc in the full court trap with their many long
athletic wing players who can cause turnovers and easily finish at the other end.
The success Oscar had on the court as a player for Mount Ida and South Boston High school
is now starting to translate for him as a coach, continue to look for big things from Reebok sponsered Metro Boston
AAU.
